Winter weddings don’t get enough credit. Spring and summer hog the limelight, nudging out the winter months as if they don’t have something to offer. But a wedding set in the quiet of winter, with a dusting of frost and a chill in the air – what’s not to love?
A winter wedding is a chance to stand out and celebrate during a time when coming together and sharing time is especially heart warming. Wedding planning for a winter wedding isn’t without its challenges, however. But we’ve brought together five simple tips to help you plan the perfect winter wedding.
1. Embrace the Winter Aesthetic
Winter has a look and feel all its own. The shimmer of frost, the silence of a world coated in ice, the chill that makes cuddling up to the one you love all the better. Embrace the chill and celebrate the crystalline beauty of the season. Pick a color palette that compliments nature’s beauty and embrace the warmth the chill of winter brings.
2. Keep it Local
Do your guests a favor and make sure the ceremony and reception are held in the same place and in a timely manner. Guests will understand an intermission of an hour or so in order for you top get wedding party pictures, but make sure they have drinks and an opportunity to socialize in the meantime. In the wintery weather, people won’t want to travel far so a venue that offers nearby lodging is another must have. If nearby lodging simply isn’t an option, look into a shuttle service – it’s likely less expensive than you’re thinking – since keeping driving to a minimum will be something your guests will appreciate more than any reception gift.
3. Layers, Layers, Layers … And the Right Footwear!
If you’re having a winter wedding then you’re likely going to want at least some outdoor pictures. With that in mind, be sure your wedding attire will go well with layers – we’re thinking a shoulder wrap at the minimum. Don’t forget footwear when it comes to photos as well. Heels or formal shoes might be great for the reception, but remember you’ll need something that stands up to snow and slush without being a distraction in wedding party pictures. BONUS TIP: Invest in high quality winter wear. Sure, you’ll use those fancy gloves or over the top shoulder wrap for your wedding. But if you invest in high quality items, you’ll have a reminder of your special day as you gear up for winter activities for years to come.
4. Offer Coat and Boot Check Service
You know you’ll want to look your best but guess what? So will your guests. Make sure you have plans for a coat and boot check for the reception. Guests will likely want to check their bulky outerwear and may want to swap their footwear as well. Make it a seamless and convenient process so your guests will be able to kick up their heels without worrying about their snowy boots.
5. Plan for an Early Ceremony and Reception
In terms of practicality, winter means early nights which means the time to celebrate comes early as well. Plan your day around that early sunset and make the most of your lighting during the reception. An earlier ceremony and reception means more time for fun with your guests and less pressure all around. Let’s face it – winter days are more laid back. Make the most of it by planning things to kick off earlier, giving people plenty of time to celebrate into the night or call it an early one without feeling like they’re missing anything.
